However, the previous IBIS kettle had stopped working after about 3 years, which is disappointing considering Bodum's name. Let's hope it doesn't stop working after a few months. Over the years, I've purchased many products from Bodum and have been happy with it's styling and functionality. I've recently purchased the new IBIS and on the first day I used it, the MIN (temperature) imprint has come off.
But ALL stainless steel kettles, had some plastic part to it. Finally we found this Bodum Ibis, and we wanted it.
Absolutely worth the money, and it was not the most expensive one out there. SOLD.
Yes, it was made from plastic, but it was BPA free. It holds a lot, it boils the water fairly quickly, there is no strange odor or taste (after boiling about two full kettles), and the design is simple and beautiful, like all Bodum products.
We were looking for an electric kettle, that didn't contain plastic. Even the glass kettles had plastic parts, and people were complaining about the taste etc.
We have had it for a month or so, and I am very pleased with it.
First the good:- it looks good and doesn't take up much counter space- you can boil a very small amount of water, and it is very quickNow the bad:- the connection to the base melts (and then it no longer works)The first one of these that I got lasted only 7 months. Thinking I just had bad luck, I foolishly got a second one (it does look better than most other kettles out there.)., but that one lasted just over 1.5 years.
It also has some evidence of melting plastic around said connection. "Hi, Ryan Thank you for your email. Known for good design and poor follow through. The thing is, your products look great and I truly do want to be friends but it's complicated. I don't anticipate this solution to be lasting, so here I am at Amazon in search of a replacement. I'm sorry for your frustration but I have a New Ibis coming out this week and it's totally different from the other ones, we even have them a [sic] 4 different colors which are Black, Red, Green and Off White which are very nice and trust me this has a new base and will last for a long time.
All bark and no bite. Regretfully, RyanUpdate 11/18/09: I sent a similar letter to Bodum customer service, and just received the following customer service reply. Your IBIS Electric kettle looked great and worked great for a couple years and then it started having these 'intermittent' connection issues which other reviewers have pointed out. Next it was the lipstick vacuum thermos that I got for Christmas one year--it leaked almost from day one and your customer service refused to replace it.
Thanks, xxxxx" Actually you can see it in our website which is [.]. Eventually the metal screen on my french press gave way (out-built and out-performed by an off brand press that is still kicking it) and now the IBIS. This is the last of your products I own and the last I will ever own.
As it currently stands I am sliding a spoon between the base and the front bottom edge of the kettle in order to force the connection. Is this really how you want it to be. We can't go on like this. and search for water kettles and you will see it their [sic].
Dear Bodum, It's been nice knowing you. First it was the GRANOS espresso machine that quit over electrical problems and crazy amounts of water leaking from who knows where. Please let me know if you change your mind in favor of building something lasting and honest.
